Top 10 Worst Household Chemicals
Common household chemicals are prevalant in our modern
world today and ongoing use of synthetic chemicals can be potentially hazardous to a
persons health. However, there is good news because household chemicals are now available as
environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Here are the 10 worst household chemicals by alphabetical catagory:
Automotive Products
-
Antifreeze - While it is widely known that dogs may ingest antifreeze and can become
very sick, it is not as well-known that it is considered a hazardous waste if drained from a motor
vehicle.
-
Gasoline - It is important to treat gasoline with a lot of respect as it is extremely
flammable and can even explode under certain conditions. Gas should always be stored away from the
house in an approved container in good condition. Containers which leak or are damaged in any way
should be replaced immediately.
-
Motor Oil and Lubricants - All oils and related lubricants are usually
highly flammable and can ignite very easily. They should also be stored in a closed container away from
all products containing bleach or chrlorine as a spontaneous combustion fire can occur when mixed
together.
-
Old Batteries - Old batteries have sulfuric acid which can cause severe burns.
Batteries should be recycled immediately upon replacement by a new one.
-
Solvent Based Products - Solvent-based cleaners, spray paints and
lubricants are just a few solvent containing products which should be used with caution. They
all may be highly flammable and can ignite very easily. They should also be stored in a closed
container away from all products containing bleach or chrlorine as a spontaneous combustion
fire can occur when mixed together.
Household Products
-
Bleach (a.k.a. Sodium Hypochlorite) - Bleach is normally a safe product to use
indoors. However, bleach can create dangerous airborne gases when mixed with certain other
chemicals and it will corrode exposed metal surfaces very rapidly if left standing.
-
Corrosive Cleaning Products - Common products such as oven cleaners and drain cleaners
are highly corrosive and can cause severe burns if used incorrectly. They can also create dangerous
gases when mixed with certain other chemicals.
-
Solvent Based Products - Furniture polishes, spray paints, stains and lubricants
are just a few solvent containing products which should be used with caution. They all may be highly
flammable and can ignite very easily. They should also be stored in a closed container away from all
products containing bleach or chrlorine as a spontaneous combustion fire can occur when mixed
together.
Pesticides
-
Powder-Based Pesticides - All pesticides which are powder-based should not be used
indoors as they can become airborne and breathed in easily. Breathing these pesticides over the
long-term can accumulate in the human body and cause chronic illnesses. Consider
applying pesticide products to the outside of the house structure as a barrier against insect and
bugs.
-
Liquid-Based Pesticides - Liquid-based pesticides should be carefully
considered before using in the indoor environment as they may eventually leave a powder-like
residual which can become airborne. Consider applying pesticide products to the outside of
the house structure as a barrier against insect and bugs.
